Sometimes when looking at statistics the mean can be very misleading. Take the first ten days of July 2020 for instance, the mean temperature for the month so far is around -0.61°C nothing too remarkable in that. But the daytime maximum anomaly of -2.35°C makes the first 10 days provisionally the coldest start to July by day since 1996, but because nighttime minima are currently running at +1.13°C that reduces the overall mean. Looking at the daytime and nighttime anomalies for a month can give you a good idea of what the weather was like. The start of July 2020 across central England has been rather dull and wet by day, and cloudy and mild by night.
